The beauty and skill of beaded needlepoint begins with the canvas. 
While there are dozens of artisans that design canvases for needlepoint
that is done with wool, silk and other fabrics, those that are done in
beads must have a very distinct and carefully designed canvas that
enhances the art work and does not hinder the beading process.  The beauty is in the detail.

When  bead artisans select a canvas they are careful to look for one that will enhance,  usually, a  #11 size bead on a size 13 mesh.  There are also other sizes in mesh and beads,  but the most common is the
size 13.   Regardless of the size,  the principles of canvas selection for beading is the same: detail.

  The art work must be so detailed, and precise that beads will fit into the desired pattern.  When a piece is completed it should look like the colors and the design flow throughout the canvas.

  Carefully designed detail work that recognizes the numerous crossings of canvas thread in the size 13 mesh is essential to the flow of color within the design.   The overall design must integrate carefully with
the mesh.

The canvas must also have carefully planned color systems which appear
throughout the entire piece that can be accurately duplicated by the beader who can then make their own color adjustments within the
original design as they choose.   If the placement of color is not correct on the canvas the beader is then left with the task of
constantly correcting the placement of the bead.
